Names of Common Statins
Statins include well-known medications such as atorvastatin (Lipitor), simvastatin (Zocor), lovastatin (Mevacor), pravastatin (Pravachol), rosuvastatin (Crestor) and others. Vytorin contains ezetimibe and simvastatin.
Functional Food For Cholesterol Lowering
PhytoCholT is a functional food of dietary sterols in a capsule. The National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (ATPIII) and the American Heart Association recommend the use of functional foods high in components that reduce cholesterol as additional options to enhance the effectiveness of cholesterol-lowering diets. These functional ingredients include viscous fibers, soy protein, plant sterols, and nuts (Jenkins 2006).
Phytosterols vs. Statins
Early studies done comparing the dietary portfolio of foods containing phytosterols (plant-based sterols) to the statin drug lovastatin showed a reduction in LDL-cholesterol levels of 28.6% with the sterols and 30.9% with the statin drug. This is significantly small difference in results between the two. This same study showed a drop in C-reactive protein of 28.2% in the phytosterol group and 33.3% in the statin group. This is also a small difference between the two. Plant sterols as part of a combined study of dietary portfolio and additional sterols increased the reduction of the LDL-cholesterol levels by 6.3% from the diet alone (Jenkins 2008).
Since plant sterols are food, whole food in the case of PhytoChol , there are relatively no side effects. The statin drugs have produced liver abnormalities, muscle pain, and muscle wasting as their side effects. (Jenkins 2003)
How Sterols Reduce Cholesterol
Plant sterols are similar in chemical structure to cholesterol. There is one major difference: Sterols are the first choice of the intestines for absorption. That means if you have both sterols and cholesterol in the gut, the sterols will be absorbed and the cholesterol will just pass through. The sterols actually displace the cholesterol. That is why it is important to take PhytoChol with meals to get the best effect.
Common Foods Containing Sterols
Buckwheat, barley, fenugreek, sunflower seeds, flaxseeds, almonds and other nuts in lesser amounts, soy beans and other legumes in lesser amounts, wheat germ, corn oil, canola oil, olive oil, and rice bran all contain sterols. 100 mg of peanuts contains 220 g of plant or phyto-sterols. 15 mg is a tablespoon, to get enough sterols in peanuts to help lower cholesterol one would have to eat too much fat. Sesame seeds have 714 mg in 100 mg of food and that would be a lot of fat as well.
Why is PhytoChol Made From Sprouts?
Sprouts contain the vital life force of the plant. They are concentrated powerhouses of the goodness of the plant or seed. The most powerful of these plant nutrients or phytonutrients are sterols and sterolins. Beta-sitosterol and beta-sitosterolin are the most active and most common. PhytoChol uses seeds with the highest amount of beta-sitosterol and beta-sitosterolin to give you the strongest cholesterol lowering effect in the most natural state.
Much research has been published over the last ten years showing that natural source sterols and sterolins can reduce or reverse many immune system problems including breast and prostate cancer, TB, stress, HIV/AIDS, FIV, rheumatoid arthritis, hepatitis C, candidiasis, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and both forms of diabetes.
Sterols and sterolins can help prevent cancer, colds, and the flu because sterols have immune modulating properties. Plant sterols induce apoptosis, or cell death to diseased cells, and are especially useful in breast, intestinal, and prostate cancers for this reason. For more details on the healing power of sterols read the information on Super Sprouts Immune Enhancer page
How Much Do I Need to Take?
PhytoCholT is a proprietary blend of naturally esterfied plant sterols and stanols. This whole food dietary supplement, when taken three times a day with heart healthy meals and exercise, may reduce cholesterol levels and the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD)*. Foods containing at least 0.4 g per serving of plant sterols, eaten at least twice a day with meals for a total daily intake of at least 0.8 g, as part of a low saturated fat, low trans fat and low cholesterol diet, may reduce the risk of heart disease. A serving of PhytoCholT contains 0.42 g. Three capsules a day with meals is the suggested amount.
We also suggest that you consume the nutritionist recommended five to ten servings of vegetables a day, which can also include legumes, nuts, and seeds. It is important to have raw dark green leafy vegetables at least once a day and dark orange vegetables or fruits once a day, cooked or raw. Snacks of nuts, seeds, and raw vegetables throughout the day are an excellent way to add vegetables to your diet. Reduce foods containing processed flour or sugar and also dilute any fruit juice you want to drink. Reduce sodium (salt) intake.
PhytoChol has no added yeast, corn, wheat, soy, milk, salt, sugar, starch, preservatives, or color, but may contain gluten. Not suitable for those sensitive to gluten.
